It would be nice to have a toolbar with for the functions for selected tracks, the right click menu is stupid long and complicated

Adding all these functions to a Toolbar is a big task because of the need for icons to be drawn for each task.
I could adapt the main menu to only apply to selected tracks rather than listed tracks (this is already what happens for things like Copy and Paste) but then I lose the functionality to apply to listed tracks without needing selection.
How do I get both ?
You could say if nothing is selected apply to listed, if something selected apply to selected tracks but its quite difficult to select none, I open to ideas on this one.

use the same icons but with a modifier image, like a file sheet, or a "highlight strip" to indicate the difference.
I also like your 'apply to selected else all' idea as well, though that, even with a "select none" menu item it would be confusing to many users.
The big thing is for me, on my macbook, the right click list is *way* too long, I have to specifically place where I click for the menu to come up so i can see it all. the right click menu should, at most, have 5 or 6 items, drop downs being allowed as long as those lists are not too long. Maybe even have a menu bar menu that shows the same functions and are greyed out when no files are selected?

But does any body else do this ? I think the right solution is what everyone else does, but not sure what they do .

This is easy to change, I'll look at the list

Easy to do , just dont know if its the right thing to do, Ive not seen other programs do this.

Everyone else as in your users or other software developers?

cool, as I see it you could break the 5 sections into their own sub-menus, with perhaps a few in the main (like 'close files', 'play song', and perhaps even have the copy/paste section as is). maybe put them all in a sub-menu in a beta and see what other users say before putting it in a final release?

yea, I've seen a few that do, but it's not what one would call intuitive. let's say it's an option that would work well as long as it's not the only way. ie redo the right click menu with sub-menus, AND do this idea as a big long list like the current right-click menu is?

ah, yea, I can't think of how off the top of my head, I guess I'd have to find apps that would need something like that...
here's my thought though, if the icon is similar to the current ones then the users will know what it does, add a modifier to the image (like an overlay ~1/4 the size of the icon) so they then know it only acts on selected files. I've definitely seen some apps have two completely different icons for performing basically the same function with a slight difference, which I've found uber-confusing.
