It would be nice if I could easily see what the original value of a changed field is.
So I can, for instance, see if the capitalization of the album was changed or if it made a more drastic change.

Maybe have the currently saved value pop up as a screen tip when you hover over the field. Or display it in the window below...

Do you know about View/Show View Pane, this allows you to compare values before and after, and unlike a screen tip you can see many chnages at one time, or would you rather has something that shows just changes for the selected field ?

Yep. Thats better.
Hadn't noticed the view menu yet.
Thanks.

I would suggest a change to the UI to make this a bit easier to use and find:
Add toggle buttons for all the views (maybe in the top right of the window). Similar to how iTunes works with their eye icon opening the filter.

It would also be nice if it was easy to make the view pane and the tag browser the exact same size. Maybe as you drag the border to change their size, have it snap to that mid point for a few pixels. Or do it when you double-click, but I see that already does something...

Thanks again for this bad ass program.

Yes, would be useful - the difficulty as a devleoper is in finding/designing suitable icons, I cant see this 'eye icon' that you mention.

Why would you particulary want to do that ?

Maybe its just on Mac but the "eye" is in the bottom right of iTunes. You click on it and the filter pane drops down...

I keep the two views the same size because I am working in the edit view but I sometimes want to check what the old value was and it is easier when they are in the same relative location in the pane. And it id a pain if a row appears in the lower pane, but not the upper. Another option would be to highlight the entire row you are working on in both panes.

Also, a little bug I found. If you modify a field in the lower details pane, then right click in the upper edit pane the field does not update to the new value.

And another, hotkeys don't work (at least some) when you are focused on the lower edit pane. For instance, I change the MusicBrainz Unique Id and I hit Alt-F4 to update and it does nothing. I have to click in the edit pane, then Alt-F4 works.

Yep I understand (you said tag browser in the earlier post), by default when you enable both the view and edit panes are the same size, but it is sometimes difficult to ensure this.

Do you mean the colour doesnt update, the value shouldnt update beause it is showing the value before you change it.

Hehe. Maybe it isn't. Looks like an eye to me...

Sorry, I may be confusing the names of the various panes. I read/write bug reports for a living and it is still a pain in the ass to fully explain them (or maybe I'm just a crappy writer).
When say "details pane" I am referring to the pane at the bottom with Summary, Info, MusicBrainz, etc. tabs and which shows detailed information on one file.
When I say "edit pane" I am referring to the pane that is always visible which has the Edit and ID3 Edit tabs and shows the modified tags. I'm not talking about the "view pane" which shows the current unchanged state of the tags on the files.

And it is actually worse than I said before. The edit will be made to the tag you right click on in the edit pane, not the one you were viewing in the details pane.
So, for instance, say you have two files open, the artists are ZZ Top for one and Zebrahead for the other. You click on the ZZ Top song (in the edit pane), the data for that tag is displayed in the Info tab of the details pane below. You change the artist from ZZ Top to TEST. Then you right click on the Zebrahead song in the edit pane. The details view switches to the Zebrahead tag, but the edit follows you. So now you have the artists as ZZ Top and TEST, when the artists should be TEST and Zebrahead.

I can't remember if I said this already, but I have a small UI feature request that would help me out:
Highlight the entire row for the currently selected file, in both the view and edit panes. Maybe a blue a bit lighter than the selected field, or something that clashes like a gray or an orange. This would help me better identify which tag I am working with.

Ok, thanks problem replicated, I think the problem is quite obscure because people normally left click to select a different row, only right clicking if they want to perform another action - but this is certainly a bug.

This is already on the list
