Hi

How does Jaikoz handle compilation albums?

I would like to create the following structure

/music/Artist/Album, and
/music/Compilations/Album

Can Jaikoz detect albums by various artists, and handle accordingly?

Not at the moment, The trouble is how do you decide what is a compilation album, different people do this different ways. Jaikoz could certainly do this quite easily but I would like some ideas on how people would like this to work.

TCMP = 1
Created for iTunes, ITUNESCOMPILATION, is considered a compliance issue by ID3.org, but seems to be gaining momentum. IMHO, a Various Artists flag really is necessary to define what is and is not a compilation. Especially today with all the feat. artists, etc.

A less concrete method is to compare Album Artist to Track Artists. TPE2 is being used for Album Artist by most programs, despite the fact the fact that this was not its original intent (read: another compliance issue). If the Album Artist <> Artist then it is a compilation.

A step further is to let users define what Album Artist (TPE2) indicates a compilation (e.g. VARIOUS, Various Artists, Tribute, VA) and check for these.

Just some quick thoughts,
D.

When I tag from musicbrainz, I get the following data under User Defined Text Info

Musicbrainz Album Type: Compilation

This will determine the album type for those which have been matched against musicbrainz.

Does my idea sound feasible?

I know it would only work for a limited subset of cases, but another idea (for when locally tagging) is:

If a set of files (probably from the same directory) have the same album, but their artists (and titles and tracknos) are all different (or at most a fixed number of them (like 20%) are the same), then make them type compilation

What about a field for artist and one for album artist?

For instance, say I have a Fats Waller CD. He's the album artist. But then say the song is a Fats Waller/Jack Teagarden tune - that'd be the artist.

This is a none compilation example, but should work for complilations too. Compilation CDs are the one thing that drives me crazy when I rip my CDs to my PC.

In Jaikoz 1.10 (released today) these issues are addressed.

Jaikoz now support Is Compilation and Album Artist Fields. Both are populated by MusicBrainz lookups, MusicBrainz sets the Is Compilation flag if the musicbrainz release type='compilation'.

The Album Artist can be used in the subfolder and file renaming masks. Usually the album artist would have the same value as the artist, but for Compilations album artist is likely to be Various Artist. So all Compilatons can be kept together using this methd.

Hello,

I just got your product, and it's WONDERFUL!! Thank you so much!

I really must admit that I don't understand compilation albums and how to process them. For example, I want to end up with a directory structure like this:

/VARIOUS
>Now That's What I Call Music 25
>01 - London Bridge - Fergie
>02 - Promiscuous - Nelly Furtado

etc.

Would you mind explaining EXACTLY what I need to set up? I keep getting the result that it splits up into many different artist directories.

If you use 'Rename Folder From Tag' the default value in 'Rename Sub Folder Settings' is %A%Z%B which is Artist/Album. if you change this to %H%Z%B it will use the album artist column instead. For compilations the album artist should be something like Various Artists, so your compilations albums will all be put under the Various Artist folder. But of course this will only happen if you have tagged your data correctly in the first place.

I have another request along this topic. I really don't care when a song is on a compilation, I really would like to have the ability to tag it to the original album/track/year/album art for the first time the track appeared.

Does this request have any merit or am I alone in this feeling that I don't care to have any information about compilations considering that many songs appear on greatest hits, and many many other compilations.

Personally I completely agree, although I don't think this is the general view of the MusicBrainz Community. I will be looking at this and minimizing the number of albums songs are spread over in a later release.
